Given the higher maternal and infant mortality rates of the 19th and earlier centuries plus overall shorter life expectancy, it was probably as realistic a way of coping with bereavement as any that could be devised. Perhaps our powerlessness over death and the transience of life was more accepted, maybe not. Still, surely folks grieved no less and especially for the loss of a child, a mother, any loved one. It was a different time.

yeah it was a candlelit tour of the house on halloween. no exhibition, just an historic home. they tried to make it all scary. supposedly it is haunted and has had many ghost sightings there. my boo swears he saw something move, but… doubt it. they actually recreate that image above and have this mannequin on some sort of track that moves. way awesome/sad…

i recognized the bottom left image from the merchant house. we took a tour there on halloween last year. great space and i’d love to see this show there….
