We have a lot of FLW homes here in Milwaukee. Most of them are falling apart because the man had a problem with roofs. He must have been pretty stubborn and a little crazy to insist that a roof in Wisconsin didn’t need any pitch.

my dad is obsessed with FLW (and america in general – its an intense quirk as we’re the only canadians i know with an american flag on our front lawns) and all of my family holidays have revolved around house tours in odd states! anyways i love your blog i hope you see this comment!

Our book club read Loving Frank by Nancy Horan ~ we all thought the book a very interesting read ~ I had no idea he was such a character and led such an interesting life!

As you have mentioned FLW’s building with concrete, it reminded me of the Mercer Museum and Fonthill in Doylestown, PA ~ both of these structures were built completely out of concrete (including some of the interior furniture!). Interesting that he was building with so much concrete in 1924 and how obsessed with it so many architects are today (i.e. Rudin House by Herzog & de Meuron). He was a man before his own time. He still couldn’t resist using wooden beams and marble though, looks like. His use of directional light in these spaces is really incredible, too.

Genius Asshole.

I highly recommend a visit to Taliesin. It is in horrible shape. I visited last year and it was shocking how bad it was. But, this is where the two fires were and has an amazing history beyond even that.

I don’t know why, but it sort of reminds me of a medieval dungeon, even though the style and architecture isn’t inclined that way. Maybe the texture of the stones reminds me of this? Although I’m pretty sure medieval dungeons weren’t this beautiful! I wish I could see this in person, it looks spectacular.

Nice! The place is amazing and FLW was a genius–too bad some of his places are falling apart, I hope I get to see them all some day before it’s too late. I love T.C. Boyle and saw that he has a somewhat new book out that I haven’t read.
