Alison, I love your blog! And you’ve said it so well here, about Ms. Miranda. She totally reminds me of the magic of the everyday, and there’s nothing elitist or privileged about that. I get why people find her precious, but I feel like they’re missing the point, kind of.

How can anyone hate her? Hating is a waste of time, simply move along.

Sure, she is weird, but not in a phony hipster way. She’s just an ordinary gal…. with perhaps something to say. (That coming from a coastal, McSweeney’s reading, moderately jerky gal . Can’t fault her if the media overplays it or underplays it. I think that fact that she has fans and detractors alike makes her all the more ordinary. Sometimes I love her, sometimes she bugs me. That’s life.

I didn’t mean her intention was to speak for everyone, more that it’s how the media and any other coverage of her treats her work. And this is pretty standard for most things unfortunately. I find it super tiresome. I think I need to disconnect badly, because the internet these days feels so much like one giant high school clique, and unfortunately that atmosphere tends to only promote a single perspective. I suppose I was in a round about way making a more general statement of popular culture these days and the homogenizing effect of the internet. Blah blah thanks for indulging me

I can agree that the coverage is a bit over the top. However, I don’t think she claims to speak for everyone; I don’t think many people could! If her work inspires contemplation or a heartfelt response, that’s great. I don’t think it’s meant to change the world, necessarily.

Except July only speaks for a very small, privileged, and mostly white demographic. Everything she does warrants an article in some major publication as if she speaks some universal truth for everyone. She doesn’t.
