I am reading “Wilder Mann”, too! Such a fascinating book! Let me know what you think!
smörgåstårta is often times not that complicated. you can use alternating layers of mayonaise + fresh lemon juice & dill mixed with a bit of sourcream/unsweetened whip cream, and cream cheese, and then fillings of deli meat, shrimp, caviar, or tofu on a bread that will soak up all the flavors. you can go for a fishy or savory vibe depending on your mood. the trick is to cover your cake with thin layer of mayonaise and plastic wrap and let it sit in the fridge over night.
i like making tiny sandwich cakes to experiment with the flavors: http://instagram.com/p/RDXXF1AFLo/
i’m not sure if they sell it in america, but ikea sells a nice super cheap seaweed caviar called tångkorn.
