Dream Captcha

Posted by – March 18, 2010

The universe works in mysterious ways. I came home this week to find a cheap dream catcher in my mailbox (gross feathers, plastic beads), with no indication of how or why it ended up there: no address, no packaging…just a dream catcher from South Dakota, and a crappy one at that. However, as a positive omen, I was more than willing to accept the good vibes, then stick it in my neighbor’s mailbox. Passing the buck never felt so good!

Thus, coming across these “Dream Captchas” (thanks, Claire!) perfectly melded my recent fascination with weird reCaptcha messages, the pairings of words you’re prompted to enter to prove you’re not a bot or a spammer when posting something online, and the aforementioned dream catchers. This is, hand’s down, one of the better visual puns I’ve ever come across. I also love that it’s black and kind of wispy and foreboding. I’d definitely hang one of these babies above my bed for dreams of vague number and letter combinations.

Speaking of reCaptcha technology, Jeff just started a Flickr group, reCaptcha Raptcha, for all of the random, odd, funny or just plain weird reCaptcha messages that he’s come across while buying tickets on Ticketmaster (some of which include “76th gayest” and “Liebowitz douche”). Needless to say, he has a knack for coming across some of the more humorous ones. If this has ever happened to you, add it to the Flickr group!

Now to think about placement of my dream catcher…
