Painted on the Inside

I’m having a lot of fun continuing to think about decorating, even though my apartment is pretty much sewn up. Now all I need to do is acquire a second apartment in Paris...or move again. (I did not have that thought.) Also, what is it about scratchy, aged looking walls? They really speak to me. That and pottery or natural looking wood. Bookmarking all of my favorite interiors in one place really shows your taste to a T, since you can only ogle so many black rooms before you realize you’re enamored of the concept.

Just Hangin’

So, for the first time ever, I bought some new lamps for my living room yesterday (that weren’t from Ikea). New new. Not vintage, not from Craigslist, and at full price. All kinds of emotions followed: How could I spend so much money? Why didn’t I wait until they went on sale? I’m normally such a cheapo! This was also just after I declared to the world that everything in my apartment is used, vintage, or handmade; I felt like a bit of a tool, honestly. Anyway, I contemplated returning the lamps or exchanging them for another design. (Have I mentioned I have the worst buyer’s remorse? If it’s returnable, I will bring it back.) When I finally returned to West Elm, tail between my legs, I realized that, upon closer inspection, I really did love those lamps like my newfound children and that, yes, it was okay to buy something mass-produced if you really, truly love it and can’t find it anywhere else. And so, I have two shiny, voluptuous glass gourd lamps in my living room, and I couldn’t be more pleased. End of therapy session.

On that note, I kind of love West Elm now, but I don’t think I’ll buy anything there again. (Though I do have a West Elm card now.) Also, can we talk about how nicely this room is styled? From their website, natch. I need something huge to hang over my couch — I’m contemplating a pull-down map — but I’m really digging the antique leather circles (does anyone know what those are?) and the framed vignette. Maybe I’ll get some antique leather strops, worn chaps or an old saddle. So many ideas!

Dream Chair

We’ve rearranged our apartment yet again, and now we’re in need of a basic rug for the living room — maybe made of rope? — and a wing chair for the parlor. This beauty, made to look like a “classic 1930s Parisian leather club chair” (according to Crate and Barrel), is composed of hair-on-hide leather. I lust for this chair. I guess I really love Western style? I can’t think of a word to possibly describe my apartment’s decor, and I think I’m going to need one very soon. “Timeless”? Eh. “The opposite of mid-century modern”? “Old stuff”?

Ah, I’ll think on it. For now, I’ll just continue to drool over this chair while Garth Algar blares in my head: “Stop torturing yourself, man! You’ll never afford it! Live in the now!” Sigh.

Pottery Addiction

I’ve been on a bit of a pottery rampage lately. I bought more vintage pieces of pottery than I can conceivably display, and I just want more! My obsession was inspired by Valeria of Hindsvik’s gorgeous vintage West German pottery collection. Now I want studio pottery, odd edges and craggy, lava-textured pottery all over my apartment.

New Home

Well! It’s been a busy few weeks. We’ve been painting, decorating and trying to make our new apartment feel homey (as well as obsessing over our new kittens, Bug and Dagmar). The cowhide rug has been laid, the walls are no longer pukey — who likes mauve and mustard?! — and we’re enjoying the fruits of our labors. We’ve got a lot of boxes to go through still, as well as a hell of a lot of books to organize, but it’s coming along nicely. When a kitten makes biscuits in your hair and falls asleep on your chest, life is pretty good. No complaints, my friends.
