Amazing Reliquary Bust

Posted by – July 18, 2010

I had no idea that reliquaries could be this fully-formed! I’m familiar with a fingertip here, a stone heart there, but this is like a fossilized queen. This Belgian bust is circa the 17th Century and housed at the Stedelijk Museum.

Cabinets of Curiosity

Posted by – February 26, 2010

I’ve been working on the display of my curio cabinet for quite some time. It’s currently filled with doll heads, skulls, bits of fur, tintypes and tiny plush mice, and it pleases me to no end. However, my little vignettes pale in comparison to Maissa Toulet’s many thematically organized collections of reliquaries and tiny bits in austere glass cases (and that studio…it doesn’t even look quite real!). I’d be hard pressed to choose a favorite, but I’m leaning toward the blue case with sheep, cotton clouds, hand iconography and wigged out dudes. (Or the teeth case. The tiny teeth “leaves” kill me.) Which display does it for you?
